“Now is the winter of our discontent…

…made glorious summer by college acceptances.” That’s totally how Shakespeare wrote it, y’all.
It’s mid-March, so it’s college rejection season! I’ve gotten into my top three schools, and I’m getting rejected everywhere else. Which is actually pretty nice, because I’m not getting rejected from anywhere I care about and I’m not taking slots from people who really want those school. I visited my second-choice school over the weekend…and yeah. Nothing’s changed. Auckland all the way, baby. I’ll re-visit my third choice school, but I have a feeling that in a week or two, I’ll be turning down their offer and accepting at Auckland. Which is exciting! I’m really, really happy about this. I’ve been working towards this for a year and a half, and it’s all coming together. Everyone thinks I’m crazy, but I’m excited. It means I’ll be around for a while, and I’ll get to have more time with my younger friends!
Hello!
February 11, 2011
I know no one is reading this right now, but hi anyways, internet! I’m a high school student from the US who wants to attend university in New Zealand. I’ve been accepted at the University of Auckland, and I want to keep a record of what I’m thinking while I go through the process of (maybe) enrolling for 2012.
A little background: I first started tossing around the idea of doing my undergraduate degree abroad in the early fall of 2009. It quickly became clear that Europe wouldn’t be an option, because 4 plane tickets a year (summer/Christmas) + tuition/fees = waaaay more than my family can afford. A representative from the University of Canterbury (in Christchurch, New Zealand) came to my high school for a talk. I was the only person who showed up! She had me sold on the idea pretty quickly. Since summer break would overlap with Christmas, that reduced the cost of travel by a lot, and universities in New Zealand are thousands of dollars cheaper than any universities I would be attending in the US. I’ve been working on convincing my parents that New Zealand is the path for me since then, and I’m almost there. In less than two months, I’ll have all my offers on the table, and we’ll see where we stand then.
Oh, and my blog name? It’s from my favorite part of one of my favorite poems by my favorite poet: ‘Disbelief in Yourself is Indispensable’ by Yevgeny Yevtushenko.
“It is indispensable to be sleeplessly delirious,
to fail, to leap into emptiness.
Probably, only in despair is it possible
to speak all the truth to this age.”
